The first time I came across the term “Raw food-ist” was when I was applying for a job managing a raw food juice bar. When I had the interview, the lady hiring asked me “what do you know about raw food diets?” My lame reply was “You eat everything raw“… duh! Needless to say, I didn’t get the job!
However, since then, I’ve been extremely curious about the raw food lifestyle. Most of it is fairly obvious- eat everything raw and in its most natural form. This provides the most nutrients as vitamens and minerals are lost during heating and oxydization. Raw foods have active enzymes which help aid in digestion, so all the important stuff is easily absorbed! However, eating all those vegetables raw can get real boring real fast!
For the past couple years, I’ve really wanted a dehydrator. I could make my own dried fruit and fruit leather, I could make jerky, and start exploring making crackers and “breads”. This past weekend (June 2011) I got my dehydrator. A random conversation with a friend, and a random comment about me wanting a dehydrator, and she told me she had one I could “have”… still in its box with packaging and everything- never used!
Needless to say, I was thrilled! I immediately went to the grocery store, purchased a bunch of fruit, and started drying up a storm! I tried my hand at beef jerky, as well as vegetable “wraps”. Not everything turned out, but nothing was an epic fail- just new to it! …And maybe a hint of impatience…
I look forward to continuing to play with my dehydrator- and I’ve also decided to go raw for 2 weeks (at least) as my husband is out of town. This will also be interesting as I have a Figure competition coming up early August… messing with my diet this close is a little nerve-wracking, but it’s still far enough away that it can be fixed!
And any good recipes will end up here!
